The Story

This project is dedicated to my dearly missed dad, Brendan Massey. He was the man who taught me how to love God and cherish family, and how to pursue authenticity. At the end of the day, that is what wine is about. An expression of a piece of earth and of the people who lived, and live on it. 200 glasses of wine became 200 memorable conversations about the struggles and victories of industry giants. These are my episodes. Please pour yourself a glass, and pull up a chair.

The Story

I inherited my passion for wine from my dad, Brendan Massey, who established a boutique wine shop in Brisbane, Australia in the mid-2000s. As a teenager, I assisted many of his customers in making their selections. Perhaps this is when I officially caught the bug, but it’s difficult to say; wine has always held a significant place in my life, both culturally and spiritually. Growing up a Catholic, wine has scriptural and liturgical significance for me. It is referred to in the gospels and is used during the Consecration, a key part of the Mass.
 
Wine was also referred to often in my Mt Crosby, Queens lander childhood home and was to be found everywhere (most often in the form of purple stain on Dad’s lips and teeth). It was a signal for special occasions, good conversation and moments worth cherishing. After all, it comes in 750ml bottles because it’s meant to be shared. 
 
Dad taught me how to explore the world, its history, its landscapes and cultures through a thoughtfully chosen glass of vino. Sadly, Dad passed away all too prematurely. It is in his honor that I launched the Cellar Door Podcast. I want to preserve his legacy and continue to use wine as a means of journey and discovery.

The Cellar Door Podcast is a platform dedicated to showcasing and celebrating Australian wines and the people who make it possible. I want to explore the industry from an insider’s perspective. We are on a mission to not only introduce you to the lives of those deeply involved, but also to delve into the past, unearthing hidden and untold stories and anecdotes that make each featured wine unique. It’s about what happens beyond the bottle. Talking with artisans, critics, the experts, the writers, the vigorous and sommeliers to capture the vibrancy of the wine world in 1-hour episodes paired with a 750ml bottles for listeners to savor and appreciate. 
 

Conversations

Our conversations take us beyond Australian boarders too sometimes, allowing us to explore the wine industry more globally. My focus is not on large corporations, but on those less-sung creatives who make decisions driven by true passion for crafting wines; wines of quality, complexity, and unfiltered expression. These are the heroes of the wine world.

The Hidden Gems

Episodes often focus on developments within my local Brisbane wine industry. My passion lies in championing local small-scale producers and offering them a platform to share their stories and products. Over the years, I’ve collaborated with numerous small producers and industry giants, while also reporting on local Australian awards and exhibitions.

I’m a firm believer in taking a comprehensive, 360-degree approach to wine coverage. While Brisbane does absorb a lot of my focus, you will often find me in other parts of the country, mining for hidden-gem wine bars in lane ways, or hitting the road in pursuit of captivating wine producers. 

To top it off, I conduct wine dinners and events in partnership with various wine producers and their portfolios. There’s nothing I enjoy more than sharing a winery’s story and their creations. These events frequently involve collaborations with small businesses, as I have a profound appreciation for the unique perspectives they bring.
